Ingredient Properties
Algae (Lithothammium) Algae is very rich in minerals Algae is very rich in calcium and minerals. It is added to cleansing preparations due to its effectiveness for removing dead skin cells and deep cleansing to allow other treatments to be absorbed by the skin.
Almond, Sweet (Prunus amygdalus) Almond oil is suitable for all skin types I use the cold pressed oil to retain its rich vitamins, gloucosides, and minerals. Excellent for all skin types it relieves soreness, dryness and inflammation. It is a useful base oil and leaves the skin soft, smooth and supple.
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) Aloe vera Aloe vera is well renowned for its soothing, nourishing and calming properties. It can also be taken as a supplement and its immune boosting, anti-viral and antiseptic properties are well researched. It is a good all-round tonic, cleanser and detoxifier.
Apricot kernel (Prunus armeniaca) Apricot kernel oil is good for mature skin Apricot kernel oil is extracted from the kernels and is suitable for all skin types but especially prematurely aged, sensitive and mature. It contains minerals and vitamins and is easily absorbed by the skin. Used in cooking and skin preparations.
Argan oil (Argania spinosa) Argan oil is rich in Essential Fatty Acids Argan oil is very rich in alpha tocopherols, carotene and Omega 6 which stimulates and helps regeneration. Very useful for damaged, sensitive and mature skins.
Avocado Pear oil (Persea gratissima) Avocado Pear oil is good for injured or damaged skin Avocado oil is mild and nourishing and suitable for all skins especially dehydrated and tired. The oil is extracted by pressing the dried fruit. It contains high quantities of vitamins, minerals and sterols and can help in the treatment of eczema.

Ingredient Properties
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) Basil is a good tonic for nerves and skin Basil is a cleansing and stimulating herb. In herbal medicine it can be used to sharpen the senses, aid concentration and relieve headaches and migraines. In skin preparations it helps to cleanse and revive a sluggish complexion and has been shown to help control acne.
Basil is an emmenagogue so is best avoided during pregnancy.
Beeswax (Cera flava) Beeswax helps retain moisture and protect the skin Beeswax is used to give consistency to creams, ointments and lip balms. It is not absorbed by the skin, but helps create a protective and antiseptic barrier to prevent moisture loss.
Benzoin (Styrax benzoin) Benzoin helps relieve dryness and symptoms of dermatitis Benzoin resin comes from the Benzoin tree and is used as a fixative in perfumes. However it is extremely effective at relieving dry and cracked skin, soothing dermatitis and helping with disorders such coughs, laryngitis and sore throats.
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) Bergamot promotes antiseptic healing Extracted from the delicate Bergamot fruit peel, this oil especially benefits skin conditions related to stress such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. It is calming yet uplifting and is excellent for treating anxiety and depression.
Chery Lin Skin Therapy uses Bergaptene free bergamot.
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) Black pepper stimulates and strenghtens the nerves and mind Black pepper has been used for thousands of years to treat fever and liver disorders but it is valued for its stimulating and strengthening properties. Helps aid digestion, expels toxins and stimulates circulation. Useful in cellulite preparations.
May cause slight irritation to those with very sensitive skin conditions.
Blackcurrant seed extract (Ribes nigrum) Blackcurrant seed oil is very active and nourishing Blackcurrant seed contains a balanced combination of Gamma-Linoleic Acid and Stearidonic Acid, a natural source of essential fatty acids in their most active form. Useful in skin preparations to help balance, alleviate eczema and reduce chemically induced skin irritation.
Borage (Borago officinalis) Borage has similar properties to Evening Primrose Borage is a valuable ingredient in the fight against prematurely aged skin. With vitamins and minerals it also contains high levels of Gamma Linoleic Acid, a substance needed to create prostaglandins. Deficiencies cause the skin to age and wrinkle more quickly.

Ingredient Properties
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Calendula is healing and protecting Calendula is a powerful skin healing ingredient. It is used to treat all skin types, and many skin problems ranging from rashes, burns, inflammation and varicose veins. Also grown as a companion plant to naturally protect some crops against pests and diseases.
Carotene (Daucus Carota) Carotene is also found in Rosehip seeds Carotene is a natural alternative to retinol and is used in my skin care to add colour, protection against the sun and to work as an antioxidant. Carotene also helps prevent the formation of free radicals.
Carrageen (Carrageenan) Carrageen is softening and protecting Carrageen is a red algae from Ireland. It is added as a thickener to creams and gels, but is also very softening and protecting to the skin.
Carrot seed (Daucus carota) Carrot is an excellent purifier of the body Carrot oil is extracted from the wild carrot and has a reputation for treating skin conditions. This may be largely due to its purifying properties, detoxifying effect on the liver and its strengthening effect on red blood cells to add tone and elasticity to skin.
Castor oil (Ricinus communis) Castor oil is extracted from the castor beans Castor oil is extracted from the castor bean and is a fatty, thick oil which is slowly absorbed by the skin, making it ideal for cleansers, lip balms and massage oils.
Chamomile, German (Matricaria chamomilla) German Chamomile is good alround remedy German Chamomile differs from Roman Chamomile in that it contains a little more Azulene (a powerful anti-inflammatory agent) in the oil. It is helpful in the treatment of allergies, skin problems, circulation and digestive ailments. I add my own biodynamically grown flowers to my skin care.
Chamomile, Roman (Anthemis nobilis) Roman Chamomile has similar properties to German Chamomile This oil has been used for centuries in the treatment of many ailments such as inflammation, liver problems and pain. It can also help to brighten and condition fair hair, strengthen skin tissue and smooth out broken capillaries.
Cinnamon leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) Cinnamon is a very strong antiseptic Cinnamon leaf is a powerful oil and can help restore heat to the body, eases breathing difficulties and offers resistance against diseases and viruses. It is mildly astringent and has a tonic effect on the circulation. Cinnamon leaf is best avoided during pregnancy as it could be abortifacient.
Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) Citronella is well known as an insect repellent. But it is also known to help migraines, headaches and neuralgia. It is also toning, deodorising and well as being a good skin softener. However, it may cause slight irritation in sensitive skin conditions.
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) Clary sage encourages hair growth Clary sage appears to possess some cell regenerating properties as it has been shown to encourage hair growth. It is also useful for greasy hair and dandruff as it reduces excessive production of sebum and calms puffy, inflamed skin.
This is a very relaxing oil, so is best avoided if driving or when concentration is required.
Clay, green Green clay treats various skin conditions Clays contain useful minerals and active enzymes to help stimulate the circulation and tone the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs dirt and other surface fats to reveal a clearer stronger skin. Green clay is particualrly useful for normal, oily and problem skins.
Clay, pink Pink clay gently deep cleanses senstive skins Clays contain useful minerals and active enzymes to help stimulate the circulation and tone the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs dirt and other surface fats to reveal a clearer stronger skin. Pink clay is particularly useful for dry, mature and sensitive skins.
Clay, red Red clay is ideal for normal skins Clays contain useful minerals and active enzymes to help stimulate the circulation and tone the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs dirt and other surface fats to reveal a clearer stronger skin. Red clay is ideal for normal skins.
Clay, white White clay is useful for sensitive and sore skins Clays contain useful minerals and active enzymes to help stimulate the circulation and tone the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs dirt and other surface fats to reveal a clearer stronger skin. White clay is useful for sensitive and sore skins.
Clay, yellow Yellow clay helps oily and less problem skins Clays contain useful minerals and active enzymes to help stimulate the circulation and tone the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs dirt and other surface fats to reveal a clearer stronger skin. Yellow clay can be used on normal and oily skins.
Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) Clove has strong analgesic qualities Clove is traditionally used to relieve toothache, arthritis and mouth sores. It is a valuable disinfectant and bacteriacide, so helpful for skin requiring healing from infection.
Clove should be used lightly when blending as it can cause skin irritation.
Cocoa, black (Theobroma cacao) Black cocoa is less fatty than cocoa butter With similar properties to cocoa but less fatty, this cocoa comes from the National Araba cocoa tree. It is farmed by small organic Fair Trade farmers in Ecuador. Black cocoa is added due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle properties.
Cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) Cocoa butter is highly tolerated by most skins Cocoa comes from the beans found inside the cocoa fruit. It contains mostly mono-unsaturated and saturated fatty acids and melts at skin temperature. It is especially good for dry skin as it adds softness, nourishment and protection.
Coconut butter & oil (Cocos nucifera) Coconut oil is used as a hair and skin oil Coconut is traditionally used in hair and skin care products. It is ideal for creams and massage oils as it makes them thicker and prevents them from being absorbed into the skin too quickly.
Comfrey leaf (Symphytum) Comfrey is helpful for inflamed skin conditions Comfrey is very anti-inflammatory and balancing. It is helpful for pale skin, wounds and acne conditions as well promoting tissue repair. I use my own biodynamically grown plants in my skin care.
Corn oil (Zea mays L. ssp) Corn oil is light and gentle on the skin Better known as a cooking oil, it is also a very soothing oil to use on the skin. It is light with little aroma and contains proteins, vitamins and minerals. Suitable for all skin types.
Cranberry seed extracts (Oxycoccus palustris) Nutrients in cranberries can help improve skin conditions Cranberries contain nutrients which can be effective against skin conditions and help maintain a healthy skin. They contain antioxidants and anthocyanidins, which help to keep the skin firm and improve elasticity, thereby helping to combat the effects of ageing.
Cupuacu extracts (Theobroma grandiflorium) The Cupuacu tree is related to the Cacao From the seeds of the Cupuacu tree, and harvested in a sustainable development closely managed, Cupuacu contains vitamins and minerals and is able to absorb damaging ultraviolet rays. Very moisturising and can be used in hair preparations for shine and vitality.

Dead Sea Salt (Sodium chloride) Dead Sea Salt helps relieve skin problems Dead Sea Salt is renowned for its exfoliating and revitalising properties and ability to draw out toxins. It can help relieve aches and pains and relax the muscles. Also used as a natural thickening agent.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) Echinacea is widely used for its medicinal uses Echinacea is widely researched as an effective detoxicant and immune strengthener. It is also considered beneficial in the treatment of sores, burns and wounds do to its cortisone-like and antibacterial properties. I use my own biodynamically grown plants in my skin care.
Echium seed extracts (Echium Plantagineum, vulgare) Echium reduces skin inflammation Recent research into Echium has shown its considerable ability to treat eczema, acne and other skin disorders. It has also been found to help protect skin against sun and wrinkle damage. The roots contain the healing agent allantoin. I grow my own Echium using biodynamic principles.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Eucalyptus is a strong antiseptic and decongestant Eucalyptus is commonly used to treat respiratory and throat infections and is very effective at lowering temperatures associated with fevers. Also useful for skin eruptions and clears congested skin.
Eucalyptus is a powerful oil and is best avoided by sufferers of high blood pressure. It may also antidote homeopathic medication.
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biensis) Evening Primrose helps prevent premature ageing With similar properties to Borage, this oil is essential for maintaining healthy blood and water balance, decreasing inflammation and improving immune function. It can be used in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema.

Ingredient Properties
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Fennel acts as a tonic to the liver Fennel is a powerful ingredient and is used to cleanse the body, treat cellulite and clear poisons from insect and snake bites. It is very cleansing on the skin and has a reputation for keeping wrinkles at bay!
Fennel is best avoided during pregnancy and sufferers of epilepsy.
Fragonia (Agonis fragrans) Fragonia is a recent discovery. It is unique to Western Australia and possesses anti-infectious and anti-bacterial properties. Similar to Tea Tree, it is extremely mild and can be used neat on the skin. It is known to be very balancing, cleansing and uplifting.
Frangipani (Plumeria rubra) Frangipani promotes peace and harmony Frangipani is a beautiful sweet and spicy fragrance and used primarily in the perfume industry. It is thought to restore inner peace and harmony. However it is also known for its deep cleansing and refreshing properties.
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) Frankincense can help balance oily conditions Frankincense is a resin used for its calming qualities and effect on respiratory problems. It has a reputation for smoothing wrinkles and gives new life to ageing skin

Ingredient Properties
Geranium extracts (Pelargonium graveolens) Geranium is good for congested skin Geranium is useful for most types of skin conditions since it balances sebum to keep skin supple. It is good for sluggish, congested and oily skins, is an aromatic insect repellent and imparts a tonic action on the liver and kidneys.
Geranium helps regulate the hormone system so maybe best avoided during pregnancy. May also cause some irritation to very sensitive skin conditions.
Ginkgo biloba extract (Ginkgo biloba) Ginkgo biloba has stimulating and revitalising properties Ginkgo biloba has powerful antioxidant properties. It has been shown to improve circulation by increasing healthy blood flow to the skin and so improving its texture and appearance. Ginkgo is known for its action on cerebral circulation.
Ginseng extract (Panax ginseng) Ginseng tones and revitalises the body Ginseng is reknowned for its health giving properties. It both stimulates and relaxes the nervous system, improves stamina, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels and increases resistance to disease. Ginseng also improves skin texture and prevents the formation of wrinkles.
Ginger (Zinger officinale) Ginger helps tone and settle the digestive system Ginger is a warming and stimulating oil with toning, cleansing and analgesic properties. It is effective against digestion and nausea problems as well as helping to reduce pain, high cholesterol and sore throats. Also aids the healing of bruises.
Ginger may cause some irritation to sensitive skin conditions.
Glycerine (Glycerine) Glycerine helps retain moisture Vegetable glycerine on the skin or in skin preparations will bind to itself the moisture in the skins outer layer. It is also used as a softening agent in hair and skin products.
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Grapefruit has diuretic properties to treat cellulite Grapefruit is very refreshing and reviving and valuable in times of stress. It is a lymphatic stimulant, can aid weight loss yet stimulate the appetite. Very cleansing and decongesting for the skin. Good for treating acne.
Do not expose the skin to sunlight after using grapefruit as it could cause irritation.
Grapeseed oil (Vitus vinifera) Grapeseed oil is ideal for body massage Extracted from the seeds of grapes, grapeseed oil contains Linoleic Acid and vitamin E. It is a dry oil so is ideal to mix with more fatty oils for body massage.
Green tea extracts (Camellia sinensis) Green tea has strong antioxidant properties Green tea helps protect the skin and body with its strong antioxidant properties and performs anti-ageing protection. Tea leaves in general are cardiotonic, diuretic, an expectorant, stimulant and astringent.

Himalayan Crystal Salt Himalayan crystal salt is the purest salt known on earth Himalayan crystal salt is known to be the purest and most beneficial salt on earth and is known to deliver remarkable health benefits. This may be because Himalayan crystal salt contains an almost identical set of elements to those found inside the human body; 84 of the possible 92 trace minerals are in the same proportion as naturally existing in our blood.
Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippcastanum) Horse Chestnut strengthens the connective tissue and skin Horse Chestnut is an effective astringent with anti-inflammatory properties. It improves the tone and function of skin, veins and capillaries and has been shown to absorb harmful UV rays. It has also been used to treat chronic back pain with good success.
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) Horsetail is a strengthening herb Horsetail is very rich in silica and minerals and makes a good astringent. It is effective at healing wounds and helps speed the repair of damaged connective tissue, improving its strength and elasticity.

Ingredient Properties
Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) Jasmine can act as a pain reliever in childbirth Jasmine is highly regarded as a remedy for depression as it calms the nerves and warms the emotions. Beneficial to all skins, it is particularly helpful for dry and sensitive skins due to its softening and balancing properties.
Whilst valued in childbirth as it helps to ease labour, it should not be used during pregnancy. With its heady aroma, low dosage is advised.
Jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) Jojoba oil is obtained from the Jojoba bean and is used for its softening, protective and moisturising properties. It contains protein, minerals and a waxy substance that mimics collagen. Used to treat inflamed skins, psoriasis, all skin types and brittle hair.
Juniper berry (Juniperus communis) Juniper berry is well known for its detoxifying properties A wonderful tonic for oily and congested skins, Juniper has purifying properties making it also a useful remedy for clearing the digestive system, fluid retention, cellulite and cleansing the liver. Aids the healing of wounds, weeping eczema amd acne.
Juniper should not be used by sufferers of kidney disorders. As an emmenagogue, is should also be avoided during pregnancy.

Ingredient Properties
Kaolin Kaolin helps tone the skin Kaolin is a soft mineral in the form of a fine grained white clay. It is used in the making of porcelain, but also in skin preparations such as facial and body masks to absorb access fats and tone the skin.
Kukui nut oil (Aleurites moluccana) The Kukui nut is a symbol of hospitality in Hawaii Kukui nut oil is high in Linoleic essential fatty acids and vitamins A, C and E. It is easily absorbed through the skin and useful for treating psoriasis, sunburn, irritations, superficial burns and chapped skin. It is very moisturising and renewing. In Hawaii new born babies were bathed in this easily absorbed oil.

Ingredient Properties
Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) Lavender has amazing skin healing properties Lavender is very effective in the treatment of burns, scalds and damaged skin. It is naturally antiseptic, antibiotic, detoxifying and stimulating. Helps the skin by stimulating cells to regenerate more quickly. Can act as a mood tonic and circulatory stimulant.
As an emmenagogue, lavender should be avoided during the early stages of pregnancy.
Lecithin (Lyosolecithin) Lecithin is used in the making of many foods Lecithin is a natural emulsifier and a by-product of the process of extracting oil from soy bean. It also occurs naturally in wheat germ, egg yolk and certain fats. It is very nourishing to the skin and can help treat psoriasis, dry skin and eczema.
Lemon (Citrus limonum) Lemon has purifying properties Due to its antiseptic properties, Lemon is often used to treat cold and flu symptoms, but is a wonderful tonic to the circulatory system. Used in skin preparations for its cleansing, brightening and softening effects.
Could cause some irritation to sensitive skin conditions.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Lemongrass adds tone and balance Lemongrass is very stimulating and energising. Its strong antiseptic action repels insects and prevents the spread of contagious diseases so useful with respiratory infections. Good for treating acne and oily conditions.
Could cause some irritation to sensitive skin conditions.
Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) Lime is a useful disinfectant Like most citrus oils, Lime is astringent, toning and refreshing with restorative properties so useful as a tonic to the immune system. It is also very cleansing for greasy skin and aids healing of cuts and wounds.
May cause photosensitivity in strong sunlight after use.
Litsea cubeba (Litsea cubeba) Also known as May Chang Fruit it is a strong and revitalising oil. It is used in perfumery and soap making, but also to encourage a balancing action on oily skin and hair.

Ingredient Properties
Macadamia nut oil (Macadamia tetraphylla) Macadamia nut oil is especially good for mature skin Macadamia nut oil is ideal for use on dry, damaged and mature skins. As we age levels of palmitic acid is reduced resulting in rough, dry skin. Macadamia nut oil helps restore the balance. It is a fatty oil so more helpful to use in a night care treatment.
Mandarin (Citrus mandurensis) Mandarin is mild enough to use on children in small doses Mandarin is a refreshing tonic with an uplifting quality and can help to rid depression and anxiety. It seems to have a stimulating effect on the liver so helps regulate metabolic processes. It is also used to lessen stretch marks and scarring.
Mandarin may be phototoxic so is best avoided before exposure to strong sunlight.
Melissa - or lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) Melissa gives comfort and instills a positive outlook Melissa, or Lemon balm as it is sometimes known, is very calming and beneficial to the circulatory system in general. It is an effective insect repellent, soothes stings and helps counteract allergies. Very balancing on greasy skin and hair.
Melissa has been shown to regulate the menstrual cycle so is best avoided in pregnancy. May cause some irritation in senstive skin conditions.
Mullein oil (Verbascum thapsus) Mullein oil contains protective properties Mullein oil contains tannins, vitamins, minerals and elastin so useful in the fight against wrinkles. Has very hydrating and protective properties and can be used in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Muscovado, unrefined Sugar is used as a gentle abrasion in exfoliating preparations to help remove dead skin cells and naturally brighten the complexion.
Myrrh (Commiphora myrra) Myrrh was used by the Egyptians in cosmetics and mummification Myrrh is a powerful skin preservative and is known to prevent skin tissue from degenration. It has a 'drying' and cleansing effect so useful to treat ailments such as bronchitis, catarrh, gum disorders. Has a cooling action sores and chapped skin.
Myrrh is an emmenagogue, so should be avoided during pregnancy.
Myrtle (Myrtus communis) Myrtle helps clear blemishes With similar properties to Eucalyptus, Myrtle helps promote restful sleep due to its sedative nature. It is very antiseptic with atringent qualities so good for clearing congested skin and in the treatment of acne.

Neroli (Citrus aurantium) Neroli helps all skin conditions Neroli is a very expensive oil and is used in the perfume industry. It is also highly valued for its beneficial and tonic properties. It helps regenerate skin cells and improve skin elasticity. It is therefore ideal for dry, mature and sensitive skins.
Niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora) Niaouli comes from Australia and New Caledonia where the tree promotes a healthy air and absence of malaria. It has powerful antibacterial and disifectant properties. Also useful for treating infected skin, acne, skin eruptions and burns. Has many uses.

Oat extracts (Avena sativa) Oats are helpful in the treatment of high cholesterol Oats are used in skin preparations for their soothing and exfoliating properties. Hypoallergenic and softening, oats are rich in vitamins and minerals and have been clinically shown to help heal and balance dry itchy skin.
Orange, bitter and sweet (Citrus aurantium var. amara, Citrus sinensis) Orange is an effective cleanser and tonic Orange is very nutritious and highly regarded in Chinese medicine. With antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and stimulating properties, orange helps clear toxins in a congested skin, wrinkles and dermatitis.
Very prolonged use may cause sensitivity in sensitive skin conditions.
Olive oil (Olea europea) Olive oil helps increase circulation Olive oil is used in massage oils and ointments due to its protective, softening and protecting properties. It is a thick oil and provides good lubrication for dry and damaged skin.

Ingredient Properties
Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini) Palmarosa is a valuable ingredient in the fight to reduce wrinkles and help skin regrowth by aiding cell regeneration. It also helps water balance and stimulates the natural secretion of sebum so useful for dry skin.
Patchouli (Pogostermon patchouli) Patchouli is a strong astringent and cicatrisant so helps the healing of wounds and scars. It is also known to cool inflamed conditions and heal cracked, sore and rough skin. It has been known to relieve acne, eczema and scalp disorders.
Peppermint (Mentha piperta) Peppermint is used in the treatment of depression and mental fatigue Peppermint is a duel actioning herb. Both cooling and warming, it is a useful remedy during illness, particularly respiratory related. Also skin softening, cleansing and helps remove blackheads.
Could cause irritation to sensitive skin conditions.
